The Ultimate Mother’s Day Gift

Mothers day Card. The word Mum written on a bright pink cardstock

Whilst I like the idea of a prompt such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentines Day to celebrate people in our lives, I dislike that this prompt has become so commercialised affair. The idea that a gift on that one day is such an important part of how much you love Mum, Dad or your special someone seems irrational.

I think the perfect gift is one that doesn’t cost any or very little money and instead contains a great deal of thought, meaning and has our most precious resource time invested in it. Given that Mother’s day is just around the corner I thought I’d share some of my ideas. You can substitute Aunt, Step Mum, Gran, Grandpa- anyone who played the role of carer in your life in the place of Mum/Mother/Amma.

  • Think back to a time in childhood- what was something your mum baked, made or even bought – something she always had in the house as a treat for you. My mum baked jam tarts (I think they are called jammy dodgers in Australia) and whenever I see them anywhere I’m always reminded of her. What ever it is buy/make it and drop it off at your mum’s with note saying that it made you think of her and times she baked these at home or whatever the memory is. If you don’t live close by, perhaps you could post it or have it delivered by a grocer in the area who does home deliveries together with some household essentials?
  • What’s your mum’s favourite band or song? Find a Youtube clip of the band live in concert or an interview with a band member and send it to her. Again saying, I know you love this band/ musician and thought you might find this interesting.
  • Make a list of three activities/childhood memories that still make you think of mum. Perhaps she sewed all your clothes (mine did) or always made you a glass of hot milk to drink before bed or read you a bedtime story. Pick any one memory and write what you remember, describe the sights and sounds. Pick a blank card or make one (I’ve got a free template here) and reminisce with your mum about that memory, pop a stamp on it and mail it. Don’t wait until Mother’s Day.
  • You’ve got two more memories on that list. A week from when you mailed the card, call or visit your mum and indulge in nostalgia with her about one of the memories. A trip down memory lane will likely leave you both feeling refreshed and joyful.

I say- don’t leave it to just Mother’s day. The ultimate mother’s day gift surely is one that brings joy before, during and after the event and create new and precious memories.

These are just a few ideas but there are loads more. What are some ideas you have or things you’ve done? I’d love for you to share your ideas.
